IFS (International Food Standard)

Certification to the IFS standard is rapidly becoming a fundamental requirement of many leading European retailers particularly in Germany and France. Developed originally by the German retailers (BDH) and amended with the assistance of the French Retail Group(FCD) the standard is designed to assess the ability of food processors to comply with food safety requirements and demonstrate due diligence. Certification can be achieved at two levels, Foundation and Higher Level depending on the score achieved at the assessment.
The principal requirements of the IFS Technical Standard are the adoption of HACCP, a documented quality management system and control of factory environmental standards, product, process and personnel

PAS 223

The FSSC 22000/PAS 223 Food Safety Certification scheme for food packaging manufacturers is designed to provide Food Safety Audits that focus primarily on documentation and Food Safety Management processes that prove Food Safety programs are being continuously implemented in the facility as they are described in procedures. Therefore, it is imperative that Food Safety programs are documented accurately respective to how they are actually performed and consistent with the requirements of the FSSC 22000/PAS 223

ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management System)

ISO 22000 specifies requirements for a Food Safety Management System where an organization in the food chain needs to demonstrate its ability to control food safety hazards in order to ensure that food is safe at the time of human consumption.
ISO 22000 specifies requirements to enable an organization to plan, implement, operate, maintain and update a food safety management system aimed at providing products that, according to their intended use, are safe for the consumer:
•  To demonstrate compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory food safety requirements
•  To evaluate and assess customer requirements and demonstrate conformity with those mutually agreed customer requirements that relate to food safety, in order to enhance customer satisfaction,
•  To effectively communicate food safety issues to their suppliers, customers and relevant interested parties in the food chain,
•  To ensure that the organization conforms to its stated food safety policy,
•  To demonstrate such conformity to relevant interested parties, and to seek certification or registration of its Food Safety Management System by an external organization, or make a self-assessment or self-declaration of conformity to ISO 22000.

Social Audits

The process of evaluating a firm's various operating procedures, code of conduct and other factors to determine its effect on a society. The goal is to identify what, if any, actions of the firm have impacted the society in some way. A social audit may be initiated by a firm that is seeking to improve its cohesiveness or improve its image within the society. If the results are positive, they may be released to the public. For example, if a factory is believed to have a negative impact, the company may have a social audit conducted to identify actions that actually benefit the society.
A social audit (i.e SA 8000,BSCI,WRAP,SEDEX,WAL-MART,ADDIDAS,DG etc) looks at factors such as a company's record of charitable giving, volunteer activity, energy use, transparency, work environment and worker pay and benefits to evaluate what kind of social and environmental impact a company is having in the locations where it operates.

Integrated Management Systems (IMS)

An Integrated Management System is the most logical and cost effective choice for bringing together more than one type of management system, for example an environmental management system (ISO 14001) together with a quality management (ISO 9001) and Occupational Health & Safety System (OHSAS 18001) into a complete holistic business management system.

OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety Assessment Specification)

The OHSAS 18001 standard was developed to bridge the gap where no international standard existed for occupational health and safety. Development involved input from a
Number of leading bodies, including certifiers, trade bodies and expert consultancies.
Despite not being an ISO standard, OHSAS 18001 has been designed to be compatible with the ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) standards, thus helping organizations to achieve an integrated management strategy.
Every employer is under a statutory duty to arrange for a "competent person" to assess all risks arising at the workplace, or created by work activities.
